What is a thermocouple?
A thermocouple thermometer is what is used to turn on fans. They are made of 2 different types of materials that are joined together. They are used to measure temperature. When they are heated or cooled they create a certain voltage. This is called Seebeck Voltage, after the German man that found it. This phenomenon happens in just about any temperature and can be used in a wide range of temperatures. There are all kinds of uses for thermocouple thermometers and they are literally found all around us.
Different types of Thermocouple Designs
There are three basic thermocouple thermometer designs, ungrounded, grounded and exposed. The difference is how thee wires are physically attached. If the wires are attached at the grounded tip, then this is called a grounded probe. This design has a much faster reaction to that of an ungrounded design. An ungrounded design is where the leads are attached to the inside of the probe and insulated a little. This will have a slower reaction. And the quickest reaction would be the exposed style, the leads completely exposed to the environment around them. This allows no interference or insulating properties to get in the way. However, this exposed lead design does wear out much more quickly as the leads are exposed to everything.
Different Sensor Types
There are different sensor types as well. There is the probe style, beaded weld, surface probe, and wireless. Rama Corporation offers all of these styles for our customer’s convenience. Thermocouples are used for everyday objects such as ovens, motor fans, and HVAC. They are found all around us and are a simple little device that was really a breakthrough for modern technology. The voltage phenomenon was found in 1821 and we haven’t stopped using them ever since. They are practical and used in the space industry as well because they do not need electricity to work. This means there is no need for batteries and batteries do not wear out either. This allows them to be very practical and used just about anywhere.
These come with different ranges. Categories J, K , T, E, and N are considered the base metal thermocouples. There are Refractory metal which is types C and D and Noble Metal, which are types R, S, and B. The characteristics of the various types can be found in the two standards that define them, ANSI/ASTM E230 and IEC 60584
